WHO Report Urges Integration of Patient Safety into Health Education in Saudi Arabia

The World Health Organization (WHO), in collaboration with the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties and Saudi patient safety center, has released a report urging the integration of patient safety across all levels of health education in Saudi Arabia, including Undergraduate and graduate studies and continuing professional development. The report calls for innovative learning methods, such as simulation-based education and reflective journaling, to strengthen practical understanding and skills.

Based on a situational analysis conducted during workshops held from 13 to 16 May 2024, in partnership with the Saudi Patient Safety Centre, the report assessed the current state of education and identified gaps and opportunities for strengthening patient safety culture within academic systems. It also highlights the need to develop leadership programs focused on patient safety and promote interdisciplinary learning across healthcare disciplines, thereby fostering teamwork practices.

Key recommendations include developing leadership programs focused on patient safety, incorporating interprofessional education to improve collaboration and teamwork, and launching national awareness campaigns. The report also underscores the need for policy development, robust reporting systems for safety incidents, and the establishment of dedicated research centers to evaluate the impact of interventions and advance evidence-based practices.

By aligning efforts in education, leadership, advocacy, and research, the report envisions a safer healthcare environment and better outcomes for patients throughout the Kingdom.
